Kirtan is, simply said, singing. We sing short Sanskrit lines, set to a simple melody, repeated for some time. Kirtan is the practice within yoga that works with feelings and emotions. Through singing kirtans we can bypass our busy minds and experience a heightened state of feeling and connection, and also encourage our authentic expression. Kirtan is the antidote to loneliness. Chanting mantras work on the principle of sound-vibration; each sound vibrates in its own special frequency and so plays on their own specific strings within us. Mantras are a little more complex - but we will learn them, and chanting them can take us into pleasant meditative states.
